More charcoal briquettes

And the party don't stop

Last night I had the awesome pleasure of getting to check out the newest wave in blogging, called Vox. It seems honestly, extremely cool and easy to use. Blogging is about to hit the mainstream. Basically, it omits the need for html and makes it extremely easy to open YouTube, Amazon etc. without using another window. You just find what you are looking for within the same frame and can choose the size and alignment without knowing shit about html. It also allows you to invite friends and choose with every post if you want it to be private to you, private to your friends, or published to the world. I think it's an amazing feature. Now every time you want to post about snorting lines of coke off a hookers ass while your mates are screaming "JT! $! JT! $! ," you can be assured that only your buddies and not your parents will be able to read it.

The party was super swank. Jeff and I showed up to the penthouse of the Rivington Hotel completely ass drenched in water, literally dripping heavily in jeans and wifebeaters or t-shirts. We were some of the first to arrive and felt like total hobos in contrast to all of the nice Vox people dressed in black dresses and nice wares. They had a delicious assortment of booze as well as the most amazing appetizers I've been privy to in a long time, if ever. There were lobster rolls, smoked trout rolls, olive tapenade spread mini toasts garnished by small shavings of asparagus and, get this, mini lamb chops covered in carmelized onion atop mini dollops of mashed potato. We were psyched to find that we knew some people there like Aaron and Michael. We chatted with them till it was time to go to the roof for an anouncement. The view was one of the most amazing things I've seen in this city in a long time. Jeff and I wondered what we did to deserve this night. The hot tub was covered and all I could think was how amazing it must be to sit in it's warm bubbly bubbles and stare out at the view of both the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges as well as the rest of the beautiful buildings. We felt bad as we checked our watches and ran over to the Mercury Lounge to see the tailend of the Little Ones.

From the few songs I was able to take in, I incredibly dug the Little Ones. I had missed their hit, Lovers Who Uncover, but was more than impressed with the tunes at hand. They have such a fun, bubbly stage presence with absolutely no pretense which was really great. Afterwards I managed to say hi to many peeps there for the Dirty On Purpose album release party. I felt really bad being too wacked at that point to stick around, but I was really into the bonding with Jeff, not hanging in public type idea and had to run out of there. After another long beer with JT$, I hopped on the L to arrive home and saddle up to another night of watching Everybody Loves Raymond and just begging my body to let me sleep. I think I actually got about 3 solid hours last night which is a step in the right direction, but God I'm starting to loathe that show. All in all a spectacular evening that made me enjoy living in the city for one more day.

The song I was about to post for The Little Ones can be downloaded straight from their Myspace page. Look how cute they are!

Lengua Naranja:

More Intonation pics. Lots of Lengua Naranja [Orange Tongue]

This is by far the best:

Tag Team Scene:

Last night I had the good fortune of slipping into the Tag Team Media 5th Anniversary party w/ Paul Handjobs, Jay and co. It was a sweet event. They knew how to do it up nice with grilled zucchini and tomatoes on sticks, actually everything was on sticks. Corn on sticks, chicken on sticks, tofu dog wraps on sticks. Guac and chips. Chees board [sic]. It was a full house over at the Hook and though the people I was with seemed to know everyone, I was surprised to know very few. I was happy to see half of the old Insound crew there, there were 4 of us in total. Those kids pop up everywhere. Broken Social Scene played a great set as we filtered in and out of the building as it was hotter than Hell in Summertime in there. They even had Amy Milan play a song or two off of her upcoming solo record. All in all a pretty sweet party complete with BSS screened prints to bring home. If only the Hook weren't such a bitch to get to and I weren't such a moron [I hopped on the F rather than the G, nice one.]

Intonation::

The rundown: After 4 Trains, a delayed flight and a very sketchy 12:30 a.m. stroll through the West side of Chi-town, I finally wound up at the Marriott of dreams to drop off my shits and hop in a cab to go meet up w/ the Intonation crew, at this juncture Jay, Christie, Rob and Rory. I was ready to party, but unfortunately Chi-town was on it's way to shutting down, so we wound up cutting our losses and heading back to the hotel to a fridge full of Bud Light and a bottle of Finlandia. Jay played some tunes off of his ipod and mine, choosing some of the more embarrassing of my collection like the Scorpions. It was a good start to kick off the weekend just hanging and getting loose w/ friends, readying our bodies for a storm of abuse that was about to follow the next few days.

The next morning we hit the buffet, popped a few Tums, picked up a bottle of water and headed over to the festival. The day consisted of a whole lot of good music, a few sweet rounds of dominoes, Sparks, beers and a crash landing to the ground off of my raw diet wagon via muchos corndogs. They were just too dang delicious. Corn + Dog = Heaven. Chromeo were awesome as was Ghostface Killah, Lady Sov and the Boredoms were entertaining and Roky Erickson was definitely not my scene. After a long day of rocking in the sun, we hit the hotel room to catch up on the re-stocked fridge of beers. After chilling out for a little while we got a call that said that Ghostface and his crew were coming up to hang with us in our room. Come again? After giving the man they dubbed Richie Rich a crisp c-note with strict instructions to buy Hennessey, Grey Goose and 2 boxes of Newports, Ghost and his crew came up to hang with us in our room armed with the goods. I can honestly say I drank some of Ghostface's Hennessey while he hung with us in our hotel room. The crew had brought a few ladies with them, but as the ladies doubled and tripled after calling their friends and began to smoke profusely ashing on the carpet of our non-smoking bedroom, it was time to lay down the law and head over to the VICE after party. After heading all the way across town I consumed all of one beverage there while dancing to some Phoenix and then came back to the room to crash out ending a fantasic day.

The next day we fought to parallel the success of the day before. Day 2 consisted of the morning buffet, more dominoes, more corn dogs, beers and good music all the same. We caught the Constantines, Rhymefest, the Sword, Blue Cheer, Dead Prez and Bloc Party. In order they were "good but never play my favorite song, ever," "super awesome crowd starter, great freestyle jump into the audience, definitley killed it more than I expectedfest," "decent but no where near as good as Priestess who would school them in metal any day of the week," "absolutely frightening, like old metal man boner frightening," "pretty sweet, awesome dancing good times," and "fuckin great, super party, blew it out for one last time peak of wastedness rad." After that, we were pretty much done for. I went back to the hotel room and crashed out while Rob made trips to the lobby taking pics of himself with Bloc Party and a mock Pollard. After some b.s. runway delays and a few episodes of Family Guy, I arrived home to the feeling of wanting to hide under a rock all over again. Terribleness set in. Thankfully just before it could get too bad, I got a text from my favorite internet porn princess confirming that she's comin to hang with me this weekend. So, another ray of sunshine is just around the bend. I have to say this was one of the awesomer weekends I've had in a long time so thanks for askin' me to tag along.

* Just remembered something I forgot to put in. The fact that Jay and I got the sweet luck of sitting in the Emergency isle of the plane. Super awesome amounts of leg room. A few minutes after we sat down, the lovely flight attendant sat down next to us and asked us how old we were. She, for real, wasn't sure whether we were of age to operate the shits in a huffy, the required age being 15. Let me repeat that, she wasn't sure whether or not we were FIFTEEN. The end.

Matt's review. Always has to blow up my spot. I think he drank almost as many Sparks as I did.

Me covertly trying to document Ghost in my room. See that faint towel in the background? Yeah, that's him. Woot!

Dominoes Are Intense.

Robble Robble

Three weekends, three weddings. Here are a few things that made this last one memorable.

1) There were 640 guests.
2) The ceremony and reception were in the same place, the ballroom at the Westin Hotel.
3) Alot of people were talking and walking around during the ceremony. I guess keeping everyone's attention is tough when a medium sized village is in attendance.
4) The festivities kicked off late, at 7:30PM.
5) My friend wasn't officially married until 11PM.
6) Dinner wasn't until 1AM.
7) The wedding ended at 3AM.
8) I was drunk by 10PM, making it a challenge to maintain coherence for the remaining 5 hours.
9) This was the 3rd wedding where I didn't give a gift.

The Clock Work Army

Someone over at Banter Records was nice enough to send me some music. The first is an EP by The Clock Work Army, a 3 piece from San Diego. The singer sounds sort of Natalie Merchanty and it reminds me a bit of some of the 90's girl fronted bands like Madder Rose who I was extremely fond of. Anyway, I'm really digging this song:

Chocolate!!

Mmm. Chocolate is the shit that makes the world go 'round and here are two fine examples of it. First off, I was at Garden of Eden today with Jeff and we were offerred this mini handful of the best shit I've tasted in a while. It's these delicious little chocolate covered cocoa beans called Sweet Riot. Definitely seek them out and eat them up. Second of all, Adult Swim has this free six song EP called Chocolate Swim. It features Lady Sov and Mos Def and MF Doom and whatnot. You can download it here.

Don't Tread?

In honor of the FIFA World Cup and the United States' mediocreness in the tournament so far, here is a video from Clint Dempsey, a forward for the team. As far as athletes-turned-rappers go, the song and skills aren't bad, but from a general humanity/musical perspective, it is goosebump inducing; there really should be a law permitting people in professional sports from venturing into the music game. At least it's good to know soccer is doing it's part to get troubled kids out of the hood. I'm thinking of setting up a stand in South Central where kids can trade in their guns for soccer balls. I'll call it "Stop Playing With Your Gun and Grab Some Balls" or SPWYGGSB for short.

I'll Come Running

Summer for me apparently means throwing caution, and lots of money, to the wind in favor of things that I know will make awesome memories in the future. I'm so excited to be going to Intonation on Friday and also just picked up tix to go to the Murder City Devils reunion show in Seattle. It's going to be amazing. Can you imagine?? They've already stated, if I remember correctly, that they are only going to play 13 songs. However, it will be rad. I will be with one of the best people I've met in this world, Kat Mathews, and I can't wait. God I love that blood red Farfisa!

Fuck Buddies

So I came across this dude a long time ago, but I didn't have a blog back then. Just was scanning through my iTunes today and came across the tunes again. Basically this dude in Toulouse, France calls himself Fuck Buddies and makes lo fi barely electronic songs with highly amusing, somewhat funny, yet completely touching lyrics and inflection. You can download a shitload of his songs here. I sort of suggest them all. I'm especially attached to "I Wanna Be A Whale."

Picture of Fuck Buddies:

I'm going to Intonation!!

I'm crazy. I just bought my plane ticket. I feel kinda guilty cause I really don't have the $ right now. But I guess I'll just have to go without Stuff for a while.

Late

on this one for sure considering it was released digitally in January. However, this song is a fucking hardcore JAM. Put it on and pump it up. It's like Parisian crack.

Adorable

new Regina Spektor video. You have to love her...

On The Radio

Get Down Make Love

Saturday night I went to see NIN, Bauhaus and Peaches at Jones Beach. I'm such a jerk and missed Peaches' set. The show said it started at 7, by 7:40 when we walked in Bauhaus was already into their first song... makes me wonder what kind of pigeonhead set they let Peaches play, but I was really sorry to miss her. I really wanted to catch "Tent in Your Pants" and "Fuck or Kill" but sadly, no dice. Bauhaus were extremely awkward. Under no circumstances should you be allowed to see Peter Murphy in the daylight, nevemind on a floating stage off the ocean while he serenades a stick. He had this terribly annoying stage presence where he would run around in circles or else be posing, throwing, or singing to what looked like a broomstick. I think he thought he was the shepard of the night. Only it was clear fucking daylight. Though I love him, it did not work. NIN however were, as always, mindblowing. This was actually the 3rd time I've seen them on this same tour. The first two times at Hammerstein and MSG. I think this one was my favorite, if only because it seems much less chaotic and way more pleasant to see them outside in decent seats. After playing "Dead Souls" off of the Crow soundtrack, Trent spoke the most words I've ever heard at a show and said that he had "a moment" during the song. It reminded him of how much he didn't want to be here 5 years ago and how grateful he was to be where he is now, performing for us. It was sweet, especially since I, too, had a moment during that song. The moments when Trent would begin a song solo on his electric piano were the most heartwrenching and like pure aural sex. There was no encore. As you can see below, Trent has turned into a total bro. He's got guns of steel and a buzzcut to boot. I think he traded in booze and drugs for bench presses and pull-ups.

Artluck/Potluck at Union Pool put on by the art collective Subject To Change. Honestly, I don't know a whole lot more than that. One of my favorite people is featured in it so you should come. Slightly more info, not really, here.

I've been listening to this song a lot today: The Embassy - Time's Tight

Shit Homies

Last night we went to Lil Frankies, which mind as well be called Lil Fuck Yeas! for Karli's Bday dinner. The food is really good and the waitstaff all wear pastel polo shirts. They also played an awesome indie rock mix at loud volumes throughout the meal which included Rogue Wave, old Built To Spill, Jimmy Eat World and others... Afterwards we went to 323 Soho which I've never been to before. Catchdubs was there when we walked in. Lots of gold chains. Not on him. We got our dance on and did a bunch of uneeded shots. Jeff is a dancemaster. He was totally mocking all of the people dancing around him while making it come off as though he were just some white boy with no rhythm actually trying to dance like them. It was uhmazing. I can't believe he didn't get his ass kicked. He even made use of a step hopping onto it backwards and backin' it up. NY- CCCCCC. Anyway, it was fun. I might have to go back sometime. Haven't danced to hip hop in uh, years? I think.

Only sunburned on my legs

My weekend trip to Rosarito was AMAZING. I saw people from college whom I hadn't seen in years, lounged by the pool, drank margaritas, ate tacos by the handful, abandoned my dependence upon technological devices (phone, laptop) for a few days, forgot about work, and most importantly, saw my good friend Maggy get married. (tear)

Here are some of the more memorable moments from the weekend, in no particular order.
* Seeing my girlfriend Kathy as a bridesmaid.
* Watching Kathy catch the bouquet. Thank god for Oops I Crapped My Pants.
* Having Lily, a.k.a. Mongrel Pet, sleep at the foot of our bed.
* Witnessing 19 year old guys try to grind on my friends' at a sleazy club. Awwwwkkkwaaarrdddd.
* Catching up with everybody.
* Eating Mexican buffet.
* Singing "Mexicaaan buffettttt" while waiting in line for food which subsequently led to us singing everything we were doing for the rest of the trip. Yes, it's as awesome as it sounds.
* Listening to some of the best wedding speeches I've ever heard.
* Realizing that 3 years of high school Spanish don't amount to dick.
* Realizing that I'm finally ready to get married.

I said I would do this:

Killer Lineup!!

HUDSON RIVERFLICKS

When: Wednesdays and Fridays
Where: Pier 54, (14th St. & West St), and Pier 46, (Charles St. & West St)
What: Besides the amazing setting, RiverFlicks offers free popcorn. What more could you ask for?

Pier 54, (14th St. & West St)

July 5 Mean Girls
July 12 Rosemary's Baby
July 19 The Beastmaster
July 26 Jaws
Aug 2 Cruel Intentions
Aug 9 Goldfinger
Aug 16 Goodfellas
Aug 23 A Clockwork Orange

Wknd Shitstorm:

Oh man. Brain hurts. Brain hurts.

Saturday was the aforementioned Loose Record BBQ. It was fun. I got their a bit earlier than my drinking comrades. I met some guy who showed me clips of the Cat Power show I was supposed to review, but something got screwed up w/ the list [big bummer] on his mobile phone. Jay was buzzing about; I tried to give him a spatula and then settled down to watch The Shade who are apparently a very good band from Pittsburgh. Eventually Karli and Christen showed up and the rounds of beer pounding and elephant ear chewing, don't ask, began. A few hours, 4 beers, and many wonderful humorous pictures to be posted soon later... we left to go hit up the VICE photo party in Chelsea. The pictures were of your usual Vice fare, squirrels eating pizza in trees, women with milky substances running out of their mouths, strippers sticking their taints in wheelchaired men's faces, Batman, blood. I attempted to drink another beer but seriously it was enough already. Highlight: some guy had this little button that just had like a orange brown swirl that said "Poop" on it. After hanging for a bit I headed home drunk as a skunk. The next morning I woke up with an apple, a beer and a spatula in my purse.

Sunday started off pretty boring. All I wanted to do was eat good food outside in good company. After a few phone calls, I met up with Karli at Yaffa Cafe to eat some yummy salad and make my dream come true. Jeff met up with us after perusing a flea market. He was really excited to have bought his girlfriend a new dress, until we broke it to him that it was a children's outfit, but man the kid has a good heart. We love you Jeffy. Karli and I each took turns demonstrating how it would not fit a full sized female in the middle of the street. After a brief stint at Circuit City we made a pilgrimmage to margaritaville, aka Maryanns, to get faced on pitchers of limey tastiness. 3 pitchers later, I was appropriately sauced and made the long trek home. In my drunken haze I remembered that the Black Hollies were playing Union Pool and decided to stop by on my way home. I greeted the band, who are 3/5 of Rye Coalition, just minutes before they took the stage. It was a really great show. Those boys have influences that run much deeper/further back than most of the current blog rock blandness. They played some rockin' tunes. Jon and Herb can really wail on guitar and Justin's voice is perfect for the 60s influenced rock n roll jams. As they started their last song I left to walk home, drink a bunch of water and pass out in my bed. Listen to the Black Hollies here. Photos of BBQ to come.

ShyBQ Beery Childish

Last night I took my Mom to Pure Food and Wine for a delicious belated Mommy's day present dinner. It was more upscale than she realized (she was probably imagining some hippie salad nutty grainy slop) and I think she felt bad that I was dropping so much money on her food, but it was so entirely worth it. The highlight was some crazy delicious sundae made out of peppermint ice cream with peppermint chunks covered in whipped cream, chocolate sauce, mint chocolate dust and peppermint goo. I have no clue how they made it w/o any cooking, sugar or dairy. I was extremely excited to see that Sarma was there. She's like the ultimate super hot raw guru chef who took raw out of bland hippie crackdens and into the sleek, hip and delicious downtown candlelit haven that is Pure Food and Wine. Afterwards, I killed some time buying nuts at Trader Joe's and walking through Kim's on St. Marks. I met up w/ Jay to check out Shy Child. We caught up on a thing or two over Brahmas beers bottled like Barbie bodies. Have one, you'll see what I mean. It's kinda creepy, but also cheap which is a common tradeoff where creepy is concerned. Shy Child were really good. I had heard the best Shy Child song at Kim's just about 30 minutes earlier. I think good songs are at their peek on the 2nd listen, so that was a nice coincidence... I'm really excited for the BBQ tomorrow. Hopefully a lot of people I haven't seen in a while will come out of the woodwork for some food and tunes. I've seen the hotdogs, and they look delicious. Details again below...

Viva la time off

I'm taking the rest of the week off to attend a friend's wedding in Mexico. All I know is that the festivities will be in a town slightly South of Rosarito. For the life of me, I don't know the name of the town but I could honestly care less. Time to get crispy!

I can only hope that this trip will replicate the last one I took where a small Mexican child came up to me, barked at me, and then tried to sell me chicle.

Phosphorfolk

God fucking damn it. I just made this whole long post chock full of links about how great the Phosphorescent show at Brooklyn Fireproof was last night. About how his songs made a little bit of terribleness inside me melt away and how the new song with "my dove, my dove, my lamb" was super fantastic and the space is amazing and how awesome the company was how fun it is to sit and silently watch an amazing singer/songwriter while drinking a Pabst and feeling good. And it all got erased. So, this is some ramshackle excuse for a post, a shadow of its former self. Download Phosphorescent songs here. The Castanets played afterwards and are on Sufjan's label but they were extremely contrived sounding following Mr. P.

On the way to work this morning

a homeless man tried to trip me. I wanted to step on him really hard, is that wrong? I mean what the fuck. But you know what I probably deserved it. I got home Friday night to find a note that had been forwarded to me from the DMV. I hadn't paid for one measley parking ticket and didn't receive any of the impending doom notices because I had moved. So, I have been driving for 3 weeks with a suspended license. Yippee! Tag another Cnote fifty to my car bills. Sigh.

So I went to the Philly area for my little cuz's high school graduationthon on Saturday. Came back Sunday in time for the Metropolitan BBQ. I hadn't seen my friend Alison who lives in SF now in a long time and didn't realize how much I miss the Hell out of that girl. Metropolitan got somewhat debaucherous, not like the old days but there was definitely a lot of making out and bathroom fingerbanging. Speaking of which, it was hilarious that Alison changed the signs in her work bathrooms to say Employees Must Wash Hands Before Returning to Fingerbanging, makes more sense if u see where she works. We got into a make out/slapping contest while drinking pitchers of shitty beer. It was so much fun. I really miss the people who are so much fun to hang out with. Lately fun is just a shadow of it's former self and when I'm reminded of how it used to be, I need to find a way to make it so again. Luckily, she'll be back in July and the BBQ will be re-lived again.

I wanted to post a song I'd forgotten about until the train ride to Philly. The Raveonettes Red and Tan which is so amazing. I will have to post it at home since it's not on this computer. I must have listed to it 50 times. Trains are so great in the rain with a song like this....

and if u and me should ever go to Hell, come on let's go right now...
warm summer's night... red and tan.

Barnum & Bailey would be proud

Basketball players, artists, human robot, vendors, hare krishnas, rollerbladers, gang members, children, tennis players, surfers, bikers, stoners, skateboarders, swimmers, tourists, boxers, weightlifters, rope climbers, soccer players, breakdancer, parade.

No, I am not randomly naming things that just pop into my head. This is a short list of everything I saw while at Venice Beach yesterday.

My favorite was the breakdancer who refused to perform until he collected $10 from the crowd. He finally got all his money and proceeded to talk for 5 minutes and perform for 1. His big finale? Clearing the crowd back so he could run back and forth backwards, calling it the Spaceship. More like Poopship. Or Battlestar Craplactica. Props to the guy who yelled, "I WANT MY 5 DOLLARS BACK."

Got a cryptic note

from Gabe the roadie that says that Murder City Devils are reuniting for some shows. How fucking rad would that be? Apparently you can help them create their set list at their Myspace page. I hope this isn't just some sick 6/6/06 trick. More info to come says the little birdie...

Hellp.

I have been raw now for 33 days. Save for a) eating cooked fish once a week b) some salad dressings I've eaten have not been completely raw c) some cooked escarole at my Mom's house and d) one snip of a free delicious cookie at Whole Foods when no one was looking. I've lost 9 pounds ( though almost half of that was from having the stomach flu). Now I'm at this weird place where I have some seriously strong desires for food that I cannot have, yet at the same time I have a very strong will not to actually take that step and eat them. It's kind of a weird mindfuck and a strange kind of challenge I've never given myself before. It's gotten me thinking a lot about, you know, life, health, challenges, lifestyle etc that I won't get into, but it's odd to be doing something and sort of wondering how long you'll be able to take it and if you might be able to do it forever or if you would even want to. What's also weird, is that some religious nuts call this the Hallelujah diet since apparently there is a passage in the bible where it is said that we should only eat living foods. That sort of thing drives me bananas. How many different factions are there out there who take one dang or a few dang lines out of a freaking enormous ancient document and base their lives around it. If that's not insanity.
