Halloweener Joke:

Here's an old one from the Lyle files....
Q: What do rednecks do on Halloween?
A: Humpkin

Dick Cheney-kin

The new Animal Collective

Gets a big thumbs down. It comes out today? I haven't heard anything about it. I loved their last record. This one gets a big booooo on Halloween. If you don't believe me, here's a song, though I do like the name of it:

Bonnie Prince Billy Video:

I went to see him at the Malibu Performing Arts Center last week. It was a great show. Dark Hand & Lamplight are extremely cool to watch. Basically Shary Boyle created these amazing transparencies that move and tell the story of the songs. The overhead projector is the lamplight and her dark hand wipes the images away.

Click here to watch the bizarre video for Cold and Wet.
For anyone going to CMJ, Product Shop has a pretty comprehensive post of flyers for CMJ shits to get down at.

Here in LA tonight, Ladytron and Justice are going to be at the Standard. Can't figure out if that's cool or just hipster overload, so I'm probably going to stick to the original gameplan and go see the free Beauty Shop show at the Silverlake Lounge. More lowkey.

Occidental on Friday

My friend Ted's band is playing the Echo on Friday. You should go, they are a soothing blend of Mogwai meets Sigur Ros meets California.

You can download several songs from their Myspace page here. You can also pick up their EP at Sea Level Records on Sunset.

New Midlake Video:

Straight From the World's Fair newsletter, here is the new video for Midlake along w/ an MP3. They make such pretty music...

When Things Become Too Warm, Make Them A Little Wet

Gotta love Bonnie Prince Billy lyrics. Here's a pic of that fabulous can-pagne I've been closing out my days with. Comes w/ pink straw.
Tonight I'm heading over to the Malibu Performing Arts Center to see Bonnie Prince Billy. I'm pretty excited. You should head over to the Day Trotter site and download the songs from his session over there. I'm also thinking about checking out the movie he's in w/ the Yo La Tengo Soundtrack called Old Joy, only I'm pretty sure it will either be amazing or a huge piece of weird shit that I won't understand, so that makes me hesitant. I'm pretty sure tonight might be magical. Doesn't he look like he's sucking on a meatpop? Makes me think of Veruca Salt.

Once upon a time...

In a land across the country, I was interning at Insound, when they were still just a little indie rock haven located in the heart of SOHO. There was this bin of promos that no one wanted. In it was this absolutely repulsive little number called The Beauty Shop. The cover was terrible. I think it had a bearded dude smeared in pink lipstick or something, it was really cheap and terrible looking. So unappetizing that I took it for kicks and stuck in the CD Player. The album was actually REALLY good. They had all these good songs about Colorado that were kind of funny and really cool and I kind of really loved them. I would listen to them w/ my g-friend at the time who loved countryish shit and we even made this bar play it for us when we were in some old rocky place in Colorado on vacation. I hadn't thought about them in years and then I saw a mention of them on Radio Free Silverlake and thought, is it THAT Beauty Shop? It is indeed. I can't fucking wait to go see them at the Silverlake Lounge October 30th. Click here to download Death March off of that very album that I was speaking about.

Last night:

Like a damn hipster... I ran over to Amoeba records to pick up the Vice Guide To Travel as well as one of those little Buddha machines that Brian Eno uses on his records. I figured they would make some interesting show and tell items to bring to my Dad in the hospital. I think he ended up just thinking that his daughter is out of her mind. The Vice Guide to travel was pretty interesting, though not as in depth as I thought it would be. Still it was pretty mind-blowing to see Suroosh all dressed up and shooting off guns that some 12 year old made in Afghanistan. I used to intern at Vice back in the day, as many people have, and it was crazy to see someone you know doing such crazy, scary, dangerous fucking things. After it was over, my Dad just wrote "those guys were crazy." Pretty much sums it up. As for the Buddha machine, I'm in love. I fell asleep to it last night. I don't feel so safe in my new hood and my roommate is out of town, so it helped quell my nerves. I highly suggest picking one up.

Tonight's...

Pre-hospital activities include but are not limited to: Drinking Sofia Coppola Canpagne at my desk while sporatically doing the Basketball dance w/ fellow C&C blogger (if you don't know what that is, ask me next time u see me, I'd be happy to demonstrate) and going to check out the new G-sus Industries showroom complete w/ free eats and Absolut Vodka. G-sus indusries' website says "Welcome to Heavens Playground." Sounds like a Gsus greeting to me. If I were in heaven, I would want this chick to greet me doing the basketball dance.

My adorable cousin:

Has a radio show on right now! Every Thursday from 7-9 PM. Click here and then click Listen on the top to listen to it. She plays great indie rock. Doesn't she just LOOK cool? She would probably kill me if she saw this, anyhow.

Triple Chicken Foot

Are the Triple Chicken SHIT. They played the backyard of the Grand Ole Echo on Sunday and they were downright stomptastic. Doesn't take more than a fiddle, a banjo and a guitar to bestill my heart. They are playing the Hyperion Tavern this Thursday @ 9:30, 1941 Hyperion. I'm hoping that I can make it down; last time twirly dancing and friend making ensued. The band is great and all members are part of LA's Bicycle Kitchen. If I don't make it to this one, I will most definitely be at their album release party in Pasadena Nov. 3 @ The Old Time Ruckus Review. You can download 4 of their songs including "That's My Rabbit" here.

Biggest Midget in my Heart<3

Lady Sovereign and the Fader have a new treat for you. I love this chick. Don't know what it is because I definitely started out as a hater, but now I can't get enough of her sweet rhymes and tiny monkey cheeks.

Sugarcubes!!

Sugarcubes reunion show in Iceland?! Holy crapsicles of Ice. Book your tix now, a mere $700 pp. Iceland Air is pretty fucking sweet, giving you great deals to go fly and see your favorite wacko ambient Icelandic pop stars on their home turf. Full info and link to purchase tix here.

Mollusk Party

In celebration of hump day, here are some video clips that will help the week go by faster and usher in the weekend. Don't question how the slugs can move so quickly, just accept it.

“Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)”

Indian Thriller

It reminds me of how I used to spend my childhood weekends, listening to C+C Music Factory on my walkman while salting snails and slugs.

Here are some other notable "slugs" of the world.

1) Slug from the hip hop group Atmopshere

2) The video game Metal Slug

3) Louisville Slugger

4) My old pet hamster (R.I.P.)

Sweetness

Things have been gettin' along, oh so much better these days. My Daddy looks like he's going to live, I found myself a new home complete w/ washer/dryer set, antique stove griddle, flowers and shiny wooden slats. I've re-aquainted w/ a past love interest who is oh so adorable and now for this great video from the Lemony Snicket soundtrack. If you've read his books you will know of the great Olaf they speak of. Will be out on Nonesuch Records. And here it is loves:
